Adopt
Sadly, only 10% of household pets are adopted from shelters. Too many people buy their pets from breeders or pet stores. No matter how reputable the breeder, there is no denying that every animal bred and purchased means a shelter animal will be killed because she or he did not get that home.

If you do want a specific breed of animal, there are plenty of them in your area shelters. Just check out petfinder.com for example. Most shelters and rescue groups in the Puget Sound area list their animals there, and you can search for just the breed you want.

Of course, mixed breed animals are most in need of homes. These animals also make loyal, loving companions, and they avoid a lot of health issues that are common in purebreds (as a result of inbreeding). Check out some of the mixes at our local shelter!
